Choose someone that you can work with. A case may last for several months, or longer, and in some cases, for several years. Lawyers that come recommended stand out above others. You may have worked with an attorney on another sort of case. Most attorneys know other attorneys and are familiar with their standard of work.

Counties typically have a local bar association, which maintains a LRIS, or lawyer referral and information service that provides low costs referrals to screened attorneys. It is important that an attorney be ethical and possess the competence and skill required for the case. Many clients look for aggressive attorneys thinking that this is what is needed to win. In my mind, wisdom, is more important. An attorney, who fights a losing battle, aggressively, is only going to sacrifice a more important thing - credibility.
